Background:
Habitat’s primary emphasis is to build new, affordable housing in
partnership with God’s people. However, we have a desire for all
people to live in homes that provide hope and dignity. A Brush with
Kindness, first launched in the Twin Cities, is now catching on
across the nation. It is a partnership with local communities to
help rehab homes for residents based on economic need, age, and/or
disability. Jimmy Carter’s 2007 work campaign in Los Angeles
included a number of ABWK projects in L.A.’s South Central
neighborhoods.
Trinity Habitat’s ABWK is currently operating in Como, one of
Fort Worth’s most historic African-American neighborhoods. In
partnership with Como citizens and churches, as well as other
congregations and businesses, we piloted the program with two homes
in 2006 and completed seven exterior rehab projects in 2007.
How
you can get involved: ABWK is a wonderful opportunity for you,
your business, and your church to get involved in a local mission
effort with quick results. Most of the rehab projects last only two
weeks. They are especially attractive for local youth groups, since
the site age requirement is 14 and above. You can get involved by
providing needed funds as well as sending groups and individuals to
the sites.
